Chapter 13

For a patient man Sparke had a dangerously low boredom threshold. When he had worked commissioning exploration and production oil rigs, the pressure had been constant and intense. In managing emergencies and disasters there was more excitement than most people could wish for in a lifetime, but for the past few weeks his life had been flat. Worse, it looked as though it would be flat for a long time to come.

He had spent much of the past year training a group of emergency-response managers and risk analysts and they were working well, so well in fact that his role had become less and less exciting. Days were filled with conference calls and meetings, reviews and status evaluations. When the red phone rang he now had a trusted team of experts to answer it.

The vacant space which was created began to become an issue. Getting out of bed in the morning was slightly harder and the journey to the office started to become a regular commute. Instead of finding himself alone in the office late in the evening after becoming engrossed in work he now found himself making petty excuses to leave early.

He was standing in his office one morning looking out over the immaculate grounds surrounding the Munich office when he heard a soft cough behind him. It was Karin.

"Why don't Executive Vice Presidents stare out of the window in the mornings?" she said.

Sparke smiled slightly and shook his head.

"So they have something to do in the afternoons." She laughed, adding, "You seem really quite bored."

"The reason that I seem quite bored is that I am quite bored," said Sparke. "I have given away all the interesting bits of my job."

"Silly of you to do that."

"It was quite, wasn't it?"

The two stood in a comfortable silence for a few moments.

"You have a debt," said Karin.

"Debt?"

"See, you are trying to pretend to forget that you owe me a dinner. When is the next free time in your social calendar?"

"I wonder if I should pretend to look in my diary first, just for form’s sake, or should I be honest and tell you that I am free more or less all the time?"

"You should be honest," said Karin. "There is a lot to be said for honesty."

Another one of those silences crept into the room, one of those moments that only happened when he was talking with Karin.

"When were you thinking of?" asked Sparke.

She laughed. "I think my social life is as hectic as yours. To be honest, I am free this evening if you are."

"Where and when?"

"We can take the bus into town after work if that is all right with you?"

One of the particular features of their company was the way that the most senior members of the executive team would make elaborate gestures to show the rest of the staff that they were all on the same level. One of these gestures was to use the shuttle bus the company ran to the main Munich railway station, rather than take a taxi.
